James P. Power was born at Dartford, Kent in 1946, son of James Patrick Power (1924-22 January 2007) and his wife Joan E. née Jobson (11 November 1927-), who married at Dartford in 1945, and comes from a family with horses in their blood since the turn of the 19th century. Young James lived and worked in the horse racing community in and around Newmarket and worked in Henley-on-Thames, before retiring in 2011. An accomplished professional artist in oil, watercolour and in pastel, covering a range of subject matter. He married at Bexley, Kent in 1966, Jean M. Child and he and his wife now live in Debenham, Suffolk. A full member and on the executive committee of the Society of Equestrian Artists and has been a major prize winner and in 1998 one of his works was adjudged ‘Best Racing Picture’ for ‘Horse and Hound’ magazine. James was Artist in Residence to York Racecourse in 2016. Tutor in equestrian art through the summer months at the Munnings Museum, Dedham, Essex. He is a member of the Inspired by Becker Art Society and elected an associate member of the Institute of East Anglian Artists in 2017 and in September 2018 help form the East Suffolk Plein Air Painters. He has exhibited in major galleries in London and the UK and has paintings in collections in Ireland, USA, Australia, and Malaysia and has portraits hanging in the Garrick Club and Rossdales Veterinary Practise, Newmarket.
