THE AUTHORS
Cary Holladay writes fiction, essays, and local history. Her books include two novels and six collections of short stories, among them Brides in the Sky); Horse People; The Deer in the Mirror, winner of the Ohio State University Prize in Short Fiction; and The Quick-Change Artist, which was a finalist in the Virginia Literary Awards. She has also written a nonfiction pictorial history, Images of America: Glen Allen.
Holladay is Professor Emeritus at the University of Memphis, now living in Rapidan with her husband, the writer John Bensko. Cary’s awards include an O. Henry Prize and a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.
The New York Times Book Review has praised her stories as “beautifully constructed, with sensuous, even wondrous images.”
Charles McRaven is a former journalism professor and restoration contractor. He is a stonemason, log cabin builder, blacksmith, consultant on historic structures, author of 5 crafts books and 12 published novels. He is currently Pastor of Waddell Memorial Presbyterian Church in Rapidan. He and his wife Linda, a former National Geographic picture editor, live in the woods of central Virginia.
