First Thursday Opening Reception

Join us for the opening reception for our newest exhibition of works by the Ellen Linder known as the Adventure Quilter in the Community Gallery.

Come enjoy the artwork and mingle with local artists and art lovers.

This event is FREE and open to all. Light refreshments will be provided!

ABOUT ELLEN LINDER:

A former flight instructor, Ellen didn’t try her hand at art until her forties.  After learning the basics, she quickly began to experiment, and over the course of years, developed her own fabric collage technique. More recently, Ellen has been dying all her own fabric and working abstractly. She finds abstract design to be very challenging, which is exactly why she likes it.

She often participates in juried shows and has won quite a few awards throughout the country.

Now using her teaching skills at a lower altitude, she teaches online, as well as via her episodes on Quilting Arts TV (PBS) and The Quilt Show online. Ellen has also written two eBooks and several articles.

If you would like to learn more you can visit Ellen’s website: Adventure Quilter

Women's Diversity Forum

Join the Women’s Diversity Forum for a day celebrating and learning about Orange County Women in Appalachian and Old-Time Music, sharing their love of traditional American music. Featuring performances by Dena Jennings, D.O. and Alex Caton and The Piney Woods Gals.

This event is FREE and open to all. No RSVP is necessary. Just bring your curiosity!

Women’s Diversity Forum was launched in 2012 by Rebecca Gilmore Coleman and Gail Starling Marshall. The WDF offers free programs, randomly scheduled, on intriguing topics with interesting people. If you would like to subscribe to the WDF mailing list please click here: WDF Email List

Dena Jennings, D.O., is a luthier (maker of stringed instruments), musician, writer, Virginia Master Naturalist, and an Internal Medicine physician with certification in Ayurvedic practice. Learn about the part the banjo and Black Appalachian musicians have had and continue to have in string band and American roots music.

Alex Caton and The Piney Woods Gals shine their light on the women of Old-Time American music. Typically less well-known in the genre, women have been ballad singers, musicians, teachers, recording artists, and composers. Through stories and songs, we’ll learn about some of these influential women and our performers' experiences as women playing old-time music in Virginia.

You will also meet Paige Wright, apprenticing with Alex under the auspices of The Arts Center’s Music Mentorship Program.
