WHY WE CELEBRATE JUNETEENTH

In 1776, Thomas Jefferson penned this immortal declaration: “All men are created equal.” In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, but in 1865 slavery was still common practice in frontier Texas. On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger and his 2,000 troops released Galveston, TX slaves into freedom — some of the last slaves to realize their freedom. June 19, 1865 — Juneteenth — is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.
